For some patients, going to the dentist is a frightening experience. This is called dental phobia, or dental anxiety, and it afflicts millions of people. This condition is a problem because it can prevent you from getting the treatment you need in order to maintain a healthy smile.
That’s why we offer three types of sedation at our practice to help you relax throughout your appointment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is the most common form of dental sedation. The gas is administered through a small mask that we place over your nose and it takes effect almost immediately.
Though nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep, you’ll feel a wave of euphoria and relaxation spread through your entire body that will help you remain calm during your procedure. The effects can also be reversed right away, so you can drive yourself home and resume normal activities after your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
If you choose oral sedation, Dr. Abedini will give you a pill to take an hour or two before you arrive. By the time you reach our office, you’ll begin to feel the effects and we’ll start your procedure. You’ll remain awake and responsive throughout the procedure, but you’ll be completely stress and worry-free. You’ll also have little to no memory of it afterward, which can help reduce the severity of your dental phobia.
Since this method involves taking medication before you arrive, and because it can take some time to wear off, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
IV Sedation
With IV sedation, Dr. Abedini administers a liquid sedative directly into your bloodstream. The medication works within seconds, helping you relax almost immediately. Dr. Abedini will carefully monitor your vital signs while you’re under sedation to ensure your safety.
Like oral sedation, you won’t be asleep during your treatment, but you’ll have no memory of it happening. The effects of IV sedation sometimes linger for an hour or two, so you’ll also need a ride home for this option.
